not a popularity contest

Today on the radio a woman from some book club organization talked about how important it is for writers to have a presence and to be good speakers. To be likable. Yikes!

This is too much. Not only do our characters have to be "sympathetic" but we have to be as well! Don't they know that likable people never write fiction? Those people are too popular to want to spend hours alone writing!
